England’s white-ball skipper Eoin Morgan has admitted that veteran batsman Joe Root is very much in contention for a place in England’s squad for the T20 World Cup to be held later in the year. Root scored an unbeaten 79 not out off 87 balls as England defeated Sri Lanka by five wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Root was, however, not part of the T20I outfit that thrashed Sri Lanka 3-0 recently. Morgan though admitted that Root cannot be ruled out of the T20 World Cup.
Senior England all-rounder Ben Stokes lavished praise on skipper Joe Root for his record-breaking double hundred on Day 2 of the first Test against India in Chennai. Root scored 218 and became the first batsman to hit a double century in his 100th Test. Root and Stokes (82) featured in a 124-run stand for the fourth wicket as England ended the day on a healthy 555 for 8.
After hammering Sri Lanka 2-0 in the two-match Test series in Sri Lanka, England skipper Joe Root said that the team’s performance is definitely on the up. England defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets in the second Test at Galle on Monday. Spinners Dom Bess and Jack Leach picked up four wickets each as the visitors rolled over the hosts for 126 in their second innings. Dominic Sibley (56 not out) and Jos Buttler (46 not out) then took England home in a chase of 164 after they had crumbled to 89 for 4. Root, himself, had scored a magnificent 186 in the first innings and was awarded both Man of the Match and Series
Australia’s experienced left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc and England’s Test skipper Joe Root have opted out of the Indian Premier League 2020 auction to be held in Kolkata on December 19. On the other hand, five Australians have listed their names with a base price of Rs 2 crore. The names include Glenn Maxwell, who recently took a break from international cricket due to mental health issues, and Chris Lynn, who was surprisingly released by Kolkata Knight Riders.
Following the conclusion of the World Cup 2019, the ICC has named the team of the tournament. Only two Indians feature in the team -- Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah -- while losing finalist leader Kane Williamson will captain the side. The team features four from World champs England, two from New Zealand, two from Australia and one from Bangladesh.
