The exact answer to who will India face in the quarter-finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 will be known only after all the games are over. However, based on the various permutations, one can deduct who could be the possible oppositions to India in the World Cup quarter-finals.
First of all, it is necessary to find out what position will India end in their group. To begin with, there are two possibilities:
1. West Indies beat England
2. England beat West Indies
Let’s consider the first one. In that case, England will be knocked out and if India beat West Indies they will either finish first or second in their group. On the other hand, if West Indies beat India, India will still qualify for the quarter-finals, but will come third or fourth.
Now, let’s consider the other scenario in which England beat West Indies. In this case again, if India beat West Indies, they will end first or second in the group while if they lose to West Indies, they will come third or fourth.
Essentially, if we were to assume that South Africa will beat Bangladesh, India will either come second or third in their group.
This will mean that India will end up playing either the team finishing third or second in the other group.
As things stand now, there are four different scenarios possible in the group B. They are based on the results of the New Zealand-Sri Lanka game and the Australia-Pakistan game.
If we consider the most obvious scenario that Australia beat Pakistan and Sri Lanka beat New Zealand, then India will play one of Sri Lanka or New Zealand!
So, it is not necessary that India will play Pakistan in the quarter-finals!
