Although they had lost two of their first three matches, Mumbai Indians were slight favourites as they went into the clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Monday, at Deccan. The hosts had not only lost their first two matches, but were even hit by a number of injury issues. In the end though, the decision to win the toss and bowl first proved to be a big advantage for Hyderabad as the bowlers exploited the juice in the surface very well. Skipper David Warner then dominated the innings with the bat, continuing his rich vein of form. Thanks to him, Hyderabad won the match easily, and got some much needed points on the board.
Looking at the match, Hyderabad's bowling in the first half of the Mumbai's innings was the big difference. They did not allow the Mumbai batsmen to settle into any sort of rhythm, and constantly maintained the upper hand. In the end, that proved to be a big boost.
Hyderabad managed to claim four big wickets in the first 10 overs, which was instrumental in the eventual result. Martin Guptill, opening in place of Rohit Sharma failed. But, the skipper himself did not do the team any good by running himself out. Mumbai would have been looking for runs from Jos Buttler and Parthiv Patel, but the two keeper-batsmen also could not do much to rescue the team.
While Mumbai struggled, Hyderabad's bowling was highly impressive. Bhuvneshwar Kumar kept things tight under conditions which suited his bowling. He also claimed the big scalp of Guptill, who came in for the unfit Kieron Pollard. But, it wad Barinder Sran who was the standout bowler. His dismissals of Parthiv and Buttler went a long way in restricting Mumbai from blazing away.
After having restricted Mumbai, Hyderabad still needed to bat well to overhaul the target. And they did so mainly due to the efforts of skipper Warner once again stood up and delivered. It was a typical innings in which he dismissed anything in his zone into or over the fence. But, while Warner's form is pleasing, they should be worried with the lack of contributions from Shikhar Dhawan and the rest.
Mumbai find themselves in a familiar position having lost three out of four games, and their top and middle order batsmen were primarily responsible for the same. They need to pick up the pieces again like last season. Ambati Rayudu and Krunal Pandya did well to rescue Mumbai. But, the bowlers undid their good work, constantly feeding Warner with boundary balls, and thus failing to make any sort of impression on the match.
