New Zealand captain Kane Williamson ended 2020 as the No.1 batsman in Test cricket as the latest ICC Men’s Test Rankings were released on Thursday. Williamson moved past Indian captain Virat Kohli and Aussie run-machine Steve Smith to occupy the top slot.
After leading the World Test Championship for most part, Team India now find themselves at the second position owing to ICC’s decision to modify the points system. As per the new system, sides will be ranked teams “in order of percentage of points earned” from the matches they have played.
Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has expressed his disapproval of the ICC ranking system after the latest rankings released pushed India down to number three while Australia moved up to number one. New Zealand occupy the second rank in the updated rankings.

Australia’s in-form batsman Marnus Labuschagne has continued his rise in the ICC Test Player Rankings following his knocks of 143 and 50 in the Perth Test. The knocks followed his 185 and 162 in the two Tests against Pakistan at Brisbane and Adelaide. Labuschagne, whose fortunes changed after he was brought in as concussion substitute for Steve Smith during the Ashes Test at Lord’s, moved up to number five from eight.
While India have already clinched an unassailable 2-0 lead heading into the last Test at Port of Spain, Trinidad beginning on Thursday, they still have a lot to play for in the final match, nothing more significant than the number one ranking.
