Mahela Jayawardene continued his great run at his favourite venue, scoring his 11th century at the SSC, Colombo against South Africa to further improve the record he hold

Mahela Jayawardene continued his great run at his favourite venue, scoring his 11th century at the SSC, Colombo against South Africa to further improve the record he holds – that of the most hundreds at a particular venue. During the innings, the former Lankan captain also joined Sunil Gavaskar and Brian Lara on the list of most hundreds – all three are tied at 34 now. Coming back to his record at the SSC, Jayawardene’s first hundred at the venue came back in February 1999, when he made 242 against India.


Jayawardene’s other hundreds at the venue include 101 not out against South Africa (August 2000), 139 against India (August 2001), 150 against Bangladesh (September 2001), 134 against England (December 2003), 374 against South Africa (July 2006), 127 against Bangladesh (June 2007), 195 against England (December 2007), and 136 against India (July 2008), 174 against India (July 2010). Jayawardene averages 81 at the venue. Further, the elegant batsman also has seven hundreds at Galle.


Don Bradman: The Aussie legend played 11 matches at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), and hit 9 hundreds at the venue at a sensational average of 128.5. He scored a total of 1671 runs at the venue. Bradman’s hundreds at the venue are as follows – 112 against England (December 1928), 123 against England (March 1929), 152 against West Indies (February 1931), 167 against South Africa (December 1931), 103 not out against England (December 1932), 270 against England (January 1937), 169 against England (February 1937), 132 against India (January 1948) and 127 not out against India (January 1948).


Jacques Kallis: The South African all-rounder is next on the list. He played 22 matches at Newlands, Cape Town and scored 2181 runs with nine hundreds at an average of 72.7, with nine half-centuries as well. Kallis’ tons at the venue are – 110 against West Indies (January 1999), 105 against England (January 2000), 130 not out against West Indies (January 2004), 149 against England (January 2005), 102 against Australia (March 2009), 108 against England (January 2010), 161 against India (January 2011), 109 not out against India (January 2011) and 224 against Sri Lanka (January 2012).


Kumar Sangakkara: The Sri Lankan legend has played 21 matches at the SSC, and has scored 2159 runs at an average of 77.1 with eight hundreds and five fifties. Sangakkara’s centuries at the venue are as follows – 128 against Zimbabwe (December 2001), 232 against South Africa (August 2004), 185 against Pakistan (March 2006), 287 against South Africa (July 2006), 130 not out against Pakistan (July 2009), 109 against New Zealand (August 2009), 219 against India (July 2010) and 192 against Pakistan (June 2012).
