Jesse Ryder, the highly talented New Zealand batsman is in coma following a night brawl in Christchurch.
According to news sources, the 28-year-old Ryder has suffered head injuries following two separate assaults on him which have left the cricketer in critical condition in a Christchurch hospital. So severe are the injuries that Ryder has fractured his skull.
According to news reports, Ryder was first attacked by four men outside a bar and then was assaulted near McDonald’s restaurant where he received severe blows. It is learnt that both the incidents were connected to each other as two of the attackers of the first assault had followed Ryder to the McDonald’s.
The attacks happened when Jesse Ryder was drinking and eating along with his Wellington teammates. Though gifted with immense cricketing talent, Ryder has had a troubled career so far mainly because of his addiction to alcohol.
The stoutly built cricketer has been in and out of the New Zealand team despite easily being their best batsman. Ryder was due to take part in the IPL for the Delhi Daredevils who have now lost their second overseas player after Kevin Pietersen.
