During the course of his 75 on the second day of the Headingley Test, England skipper Alastair Cook became the highest Test run-scorer for his country, overtaking the legendary Graham Gooch. Here’s a look at the updated list of the top ten run-scorers for England in Tests.

Alastair Cook: The England skipper is on top of the list, with 8944 runs playing in his 114th Test. He averages 46.8 with 27 hundreds and 41 fifties and a highest score of 294.

Graham Gooch: The former England captain has been pushed down to number two. In 118 Tests, he scored 8900 runs at an average of 42.5 with 20 hundreds and 46 fifties. Gooch has a highest Test score of 333.

Alec Stewart: In 133 Tests, the former England captain and wicket-keeper amassed 8463 runs at an average of 39.5 with 15 hundreds and 45 fifties. Stewart has a highest score of 190.

David Gower: In 117 Tests, the elegant left-hander scored 8231 runs at an average of 44.2 with 18 hundreds and 39 fifties Gower’s highest score is 215.


Kevin Pietersen: The controversial bat is right up there at number five. In 104 Tests, he smashed 8181 runs at an average of 47.2 with 23 hundreds and 35 fifties. Pietersen has a highest score of 227.


Geoff Boycott: The retired England batsman scored 8114 runs in 108 Tests at an average of 47.7 with 22 hundreds and 42 fifties. Boycott has a highest score of 246 not out.


Michael Atherton: The former England captain and opener scored 7728 runs in 115 Tests at an average of 37.6 with 16 hundreds and fifties. Atherton has a highest score of 185 not out.


Colin Cowdrey: Another England legend is number eight on the list with 7624 runs from 114 Tests. Cowdrey scored his runs at an average of 44 with 22 hundreds and 38 fifties. He had a highest score of 182.


Ian Bell: The England middle-order bat scored 7353 runs in 110 Tests at an average of 44.2 with 22 hundreds and 42 fifties. Bell has a highest Test score of 235.


Wally Hammond: In 85 Tests, Hammond, one of English cricket’s all-time greats, slammed 7249 runs at an average of 58.4 with 22 hundreds and 24 fifties. Hammond’s highest score in Tests was a massive 336 not out.
