Kolkata Knight Riders with a strong bowling performance upset defending champions Mumbai Indians by 41 runs in the IPL 7 opener at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

Chasing a competitive target of 164 on a green pitch, Mumbai Indians struggled to get the momentum following a slow start of 40 for 2 in 7.5 overs. AT Rayudu scored 48 from 40 balls while Skipper Rohit Sharma got 27 from 20 balls which were not enough for Mumbai Indians to get to the target.

There was no chance for Kieron Pollard to create any magic and he remained unbeaten on 6 from 8 balls as Mumbai Indians were kept down to 122 for 7. Morne Morkel used the green pitch to his advantage to come up with mean figures of 1 for 16 in 4 overs. Sunil Narine collected four wickets for 20 runs off his 4 overs to bowl KKR to a comprehensive win.

Earlier, KKR too got off to a slow start but the 2nd wicket pair of Manish Pandey and Jacques Kallis fought it out to score half centuries. With wickets in hand and well set batsmen at the crease for most part of its innings, KKR finished with 163 for 5.

Jacques Kallis, who opened the innings scored 72 from 46 balls with 5 fours and 3 sixes while batting for 18.2 overs. Kallis got the Man of the Match for his solid knock. His partner in a 2nd wicket stand of 131 runs was Manish Pandey who batted really well to score 64 from 53 balls with 6 fours and 2 sixes. Lasith Malinga took 4 for 23 in four overs but his bowling wasn’t that impressive in the end.
