Punjab Kings (PBKS) beat Mumbai Indians (MI) by 13 runs in match number 31 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday, April 22. In a high-scoring encounter, Mumbai sent Punjab into bat after losing the toss. PBKS recovered from a poor start to post 214/8 on the board. In the chase, Mumbai finished on 201/6.

PBKS lost Matthew Short for 11 as he was dismissed by Cameron Green. Arjun Tendulkar then trapped Prabhsimran Singh (26) leg before, while Piyush Chawla (2/15) chipped in with the scalps of Liam Livingstone (10) and Atharva Taide (29 off 17).

At 83/4, Mumbai were in a dominant position. However, the middle and lower order of Punjab turned the game on its head. Harpreet Singh (41 off 28), skipper Sam Curran (55 off 29) and Jitesh Sharma (25 off 7) combined to lift PBKS past the 210-mark.

Chasing 215, Mumbai lost Ishan Kishan for 1 to Arshdeep Singh. Rohit Sharma (44 off 27), Cameron Green (67 off 43) and Suryakumar Yadav (57 off 26), however, combined to lift MI in the chase. Rohit chipped a return catch to Livingstone, Green miscued a big hit off Nathan Ellis, while SKY flicked Arshdeep straight to midwicket.

The Punjab left-arm pacer then knocked over Tilak Varma (3) and Nehal Wadhera (0) off consecutive deliveries, breaking the stumps on both occasions. Arshdeep finished with exceptional figures of 4/29 as Punjab registered a memorable win in the high-scoring clash.

Refecting on the defeat at home, Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma admitted that the death bowling was poor. He commented, “Yes, a little disappointment there, we made some errors in the field which can happen, not going look too much into that. Just keep our heads high, we have won three and lost three, pretty even-stevens at the moment. There is a lot of time left in the tournament. We can't look down and start worrying about things. We made some errors but something to go back and look into.”

On the excellent batting performances of Green and Suryakumar, which kept MI’s hopes alive, Rohit commented, “Quite happy with the way those two guys batted today, and they kept us in the game till the end. Credit to Arshdeep the way he bowled in the last couple of overs.”
