Delhi Capitals progressed to their maiden IPL final following an excellent all-round display to stun Sunrisers Hyderabad in the second Qualifier at Abu Dhabi on Sunday. Batting first, DC posted an impressive 189 on the back of Shikhar Dhawan’s 78 and crucial contributions from Marcus Stoinis (38 from 27 opening the innings) and Shimron Hetmyer 42 not out from 22 balls.
After twelve attempts at reaching the final previously in vain, the Delhi Capitals finally managed to break the jinx as they beat the Sunrisers Hyderabad by 17 runs in the qualifier-2. The batsmen had done their job by putting up 189 runs on the board, and Rabada-Stoinis picked up seven wickets between them even as Williamson nearly pulled off a major heist.
Having knocked out Royal Challengers Bangalore with a thoroughly professional effort in the Eliminator on Friday, Sunrisers Hyderabad would go in with the upper hand when they take on Delhi Capitals in the second Qualifier of IPL 2020 at Abu Dhabi on Sunday. SRH have been on a roll, winning five of their last six matches. Delhi, on the other hand, have been having a tough time. They lost four matches in a row, and only a victory against RCB in their last league encounter ensured them qualification for play-offs.
Mumbai were clinical today, both with the bat and ball as they cruised to their sixth finale. After putting up 200 on the board, Boult and Bumrah bowled fiery spells with the ball, with Bumrah registering figures of 4-14.
It needed the entire duration of 56 matches to decide on the four teams who would make the IPL 2020 play-offs. On rather expected lines, two of the favourites to win the title this year, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals, will be facing each other in the first qualifier at Dubai on Thursday. On current form, Mumbai would go in with the edge despite their 10-wicket loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad, playing with an under-strength squad. MI beat DC in both the league stage games, first by five wickets and then by nine wickets
Ajinkya Rahane’s classy 60(45) made sure that Delhi will play Mumbai in the first qualifier and will get two shots at reaching the final. The target in sight was just 153, and Delhi cruised to it with an over to spare.
Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore will have to give it all they have in match number 55 of IPL 2020 at Abu Dhabi on Monday. Both DC and RCB are stuck on 14 points from 13 matches with four and three consecutive losses respectively. Whoever wins the contest will finish second on the points table while the losing side will have to battle it out with multiple sides stuck on 14, with the net run rate coming into the equation.
Yet another heavy defeat to Delhi, their fourth in a row. Their batsmen struggled for momentum and could only put 110 on the board, which was no challenge for table toppers Mumbai as they steamrolled Delhi bowlers with Kishan leading the way with a fine knock of 72*(47).
Defending champions Mumbai Indians, who have confirmed their play-offs berth will be keen to continue their impressive run when they face Delhi Capitals in match number 51 of IPL 2020 at Dubai on Saturday, the first game of the double-header. While Mumbai will go into the match high on confidence, Delhi have a few headaches to deal with as they are on a three-match losing streak. They purple patch during the first half of IPL 2020 now seems like distant memory.
