Stumps on Day 1

The dismissal of centurion Tim McIntosh in the penultimate over before stumps has evened out the honours on Day 1 of the Second Test. New Zealand because of a slow run rate have finished at 258 for 4 with Jesse Ryder on 22* (from 64 balls with 3 fours) batting along with night watchman Gareth Hopkins yet to open his account.

There was a good partnership in progress between McIntosh and Taylor which came to an end when the latter lost his concentration to dab away at a wide one on the frontfoot to get caught behind. Zaheer Khan was the bowler removing Taylor (24 from 53 balls) with one that swung away from round the sticks. It was a 55-run stand for the 3rd wicket that was broken by the reverse swinging ball from Zaheer.

New Zealand got another fighting partnership going and just when the day was about to close, a tired Tim McIntosh chopped his forward defence off Zaheer Khan onto the stumps. The left handed opener had worked extremely hard to score his second Test century and his knock of 102 lasted 254 balls. McIntosh scored 10 fours and a six before he played away from his body to get an inside edge onto the stumps off the second new ball.

The final session saw New Zealand pick up 99 runs in 35 overs for the loss of two wickets.

Tea on Day 1

Kiwis cruised through the afternoon session at Hyderabad to 159 for 2 in 55 overs by Tea. The visitors lost just the one wicket that of one down batsman Martin Guptill in the entire session. In the 29 overs of play, New Zealand collected 74 runs with opener Tim McIntosh batting steadily on 55 from 151 balls with 4 fours along with Ross Taylor who just came to the crease after the fall of the second wicket.

Martin Guptill added 147 runs for the second wicket with McIntosh before getting wrongly given out lbw by Umpire Kumar Dharmasena. Guptill went back for a flick and got hit on the pad infront of leg to a Pragyan Ojha delivery that was appearing to be drifting down the legside. The Umpire thought that Guptill had shuffled far too across and the ball turned just enough to hit the leg stump. Guptill scored 85 from 160 balls with 9 fours before he got dismissed in the 50th over.

Lunch on Day 1

New Zealand finished the opening session of the Test Match at solid 76 for 1 in 26 overs. Opener Tim McIntosh who bagged a pair in the first Test at Ahmedabad is looking good and determined so far in his unbeaten knock of 25 from 64 balls with three fours. Giving him company is Martin Guptill who was lucky to escape from a big nick off Sreesanth which turned out to be a noball for overstepping. Guptill from that moment has batted out extremely well to move onto an unbeaten 36 from 86 balls with 2 fours and a majestic six over long off in Harbhajan Singh's bowling.

The only wicket to go down for the visitors was that of Brendon McCullum in the 4th over when the right hander got a nasty one which kicked away off the seam to force an outside edge. Sreesanth was the bowler taking that wicket and he could have added one more but for overstepping the bowling crease.

Toss and Teams

New Zealand has made as many as three changes to their line up for the Second Test at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first on a track that looks hard. India who fought it out for a draw in the first Test at Ahmedabad have retained the same playing XI.

The Kiwis have brought in Martin Guptill for BJ Watling, Tim Southee for Jeetan Patel and Brent Arnel for Hamish Bennett.

The Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad is hosting its first ever Test Match and its also the first time that VVS Laxman will be playing his first Test in his home town! The pitch has been under covers in the last few days because of rain but the last couple of days the weather has been perfect for the Test Match to get underway. The pitch is expected to be on the harder side which means that there will be good pace and bounce for all the bowlers and strokeplay for the batsmen will be conducive. There may not be a lot of reverse swing expected with the outfield being lush green and the pitch unlikely to be on the drier side.
