Angelo Mathews has been named as Sri Lanka’s new T20I Captain with the Board appointing him for a period of 1 year. Speedster Lasith Malinga has been named as Mathews’ deputy.
The 25-year-old Mathews’ promotion as the T20I Captain comes following the resignation from Mahela Jayawardene just after the World T20 Final. Mathews’ first assignment will be against the touring Kiwis in their Only T20I at Pallekele on the 30th of this month.
Angelo Mathews is also likely to be Sri Lanka’s next Captain in Tests and ODIs as Mahela Jayawardene had expressed his desire to quit from the role most probably after Sri Lanka’s Tour of Australia in February 2013.
