Kolkata Knight Riders were 10 runs ahead on the Duckworth-Lewis method against the Chennai Super Kings when the rain stopped play at the Eden Gardens on Saturday.
Earlier, Chennai Super Kings struggled against some fine bowling efforts by Brett Lee and Iqbal Abdulla as they were restricted to 114 for four in their return-leg Indian Premier League clash against Kolkata Knight Riders here on Saturday.
After the match was delayed by an hour due to light drizzle, Lee and Abdulla utilised the slow nature of the wicket very well to rattle the Super Kings' line-up at the Eden Gardens.
Lee had an astonishing figure of 4-0-8-0, while Abdulla had a tidy 4-0-15-1, something that meant only six boundaries and two sixes were hit during the Super Kings innings.
Having survived on two occasions, Subramaniam Badrinath top-scored for the Chennai side with 41-ball 54 (3x4, 2x6) before he ran himself out on the last ball of the innings.
Albie Morkel hit a run-a-ball 30 (3x4) to stitch a 65-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Badrinath.
Opting to bat, the Super Kings did not have it easy against the Knight Riders as pace spearhead Lee and left-arm spinner Abdullah ensured a slow start for the visitors.
Lee was spot on giving away just five runs from his first spell of three overs, while Abdullah got the first breakthrough in the form of Murali Vijay (5 from 14 balls) to give Knight Riders a fine start.
Soon the visitors were reduced to 15/2 at the end of five overs with Yusuf Pathan making his presence felt in his first over, taking the prized-scalp of in-form Suresh Raina (4).
Only 12 runs came from their first five overs, while Super Kings hit their first boundary in the form of a six in the 10th over, something to show how difficult it was to score under the overcast conditions.
In fact, the six by Badrinath could have been a dismissal but Jaydev Unadkat misjudged the catch to let it go over the fence.
Badrinath held on to one end as he stitched a crucial 34-run partnership from 32 balls with Michael Hussey (15 from 26 balls).
Under light drizzle, the match was delayed by an hour even as there was no cut to the 20-over format. There were drizzle around the scheduled toss time -- 3.30 pm -- while the surrounding areas of the city experienced some showers as the ground was put under thick covers.
The covers were however taken off 30 minutes after the scheduled start as umpires decided to start the proceedings at 5 pm.
